My Case For Working From Bed
& why we shouldn’t feel guilty for finding comfort in our work
Yesterday when I got back from an evening dog walk, I caught a whiff of woodsmoke in the air.
Is there any better feeling than knowing those cosy days of Autumn are upon us?
It's the time of year when I like to snuggle up warm with a blanket and a hot water bottle, and work either from the armchair next to the fire, or from the warm comfort of my bed.
Essentially - I want to hibernate.
I have some of my most productive days working from bed.
Whenever I talk about working from bed in my IG stories, the response is either ‘me too, I loooove working from bed’ or ‘oh NOOO, I couldn't. I've got to get up and sit at my desk to be productive'.
I truly believe the latter response comes from deep conditioning - the stories we're told about what ‘real work’ looks like.
We’re conditioned by messaging around toxic productivity (how to get up at 5am every day)…
…and a patriarchal view of what work should look like (pencil skirts, desks, glass offices, conference calls, 9-5).
It leads us all to believe that we have to be up and dressed for our brains to work most effectively - which is nonsense of course.
It’s 23:59 and I’ve just typed this out in a couple of mins in my phone notes, as the thought came to me.
I can't sleep - my head is full of ideas - even though I'm not dressed and sat at a desk… Just sayin’
If the idea of working from bed feels like a no-no to you - I'd love you to try it. Perhaps think of it as entrepreneurial self-care.
After all, why have we got our own businesses anyway? For me it’s certainly not so I can emulate having a 9-5 in my own home.
I want to travel with my work, be flexible with my work, be able to do it from wherever is most comfortable. That might be my sofa, my bed or in the summer - my garden.
And I want the same kinda freedom for you. 🤎
